LIBRARY RECONSTRUCTION | OAK GROVE LIBRARY | KAUNAS

The “Oak Grove Library” (Kaunas County Public Library) is the second-largest library in Lithuania, with more than one million books on open shelves and in storage.

The modernist building was originally designed in 1987, the recent reconstruction aimed to preserve unique elements while updating outdated features. The new design showcases a bright, contemporary interior with an open-plan structure, emphasizing an oak grove visible through windows. The library is situated in Europe's largest urban oak grove, which inspired a new interior concept: greenery has been invited inside. The main axis revolves around a green oasis on the third floor, which extends throughout the space with many more plants of different scales integrated into the furniture and space composition. A neutral background is thoughtfully constructed with bright tones and natural oak surfaces to highlight books and greenery.

Its new identity, inspired by the oak grove, invites visitors to not only take a book home but also to stay and get inspired.

After the reconstruction, the library opened up with bright and contemporary interior architecture, many more open spaces, two event halls, individual working rooms, a green oasis, and much more.
