TWO FAMILY HOUSE | NEAR VILNIUS
This site brings together two worlds – civilization and nature. Located close to the Vilnius city center, yet set along the bank of a small river, the plot is both unique and distinctive. We designed a semi-detached housing complex for two families, where urban comfort meets a close connection to nature.
The contrast between these different worlds is reflected in the architecture of the buildings. Two similar yet distinct houses are connected by an auxiliary space. From the street, the complex appears rather closed and restrained – black, charred-wood façades protect the inner courtyard and its privacy. From the courtyard side, however, the architecture softens and opens up to nature: large floor-to-ceiling windows and terraces oriented in different directions allow residents to enjoy views of the river and the surrounding greenery.
With this project, we aimed to challenge the myths often associated with semi-detached housing – that it inevitably lacks privacy and individuality. On the contrary, here high quality living is ensured by uniqly shaped volumes and thoughtfully integrated greenery. Here, boundaries between neighbors are defined not by fences, but by planting that not only creates a cozy environment, but also encourages a sense of community.
